I decided last week to step out of normalcy and grab a novel from my local library that was written about love, a topic that I try to steer clear from because lets face it authors sometimes just overdue it. while I was in the library I stumbled upon a book that caught my eye by its cover and it witty title. Like all readers I look past the cover and title and read the back for the overview to see if it catches my attention. This book's (I will never name books that I give negative critique on for the sake of a reader that wants to give it a chance and respect for the author) overview caught my attention and I was like why not read a love story, the world is full of them right? WRONG!!! I could not even get past the prologue in this book before I found myself watching TV or my eyes started to wonder, instead of being glued to the words on the page. The author was unable to create a witty and catchy plot that was able to captivate my attention and will me to read into the wee hours of the night.
For starters the author gave me a prologue that did not connect at all with the first chapter and that is a huge mistake in my opinion because as a reader I was not able to connect the characters that where mentioned in the prologue to the characters I found myself being introduced to in the first chapter. If you are going to write a prologue you have to write one that is going to count, not one that is going to ruin your book before your reader gets to the first chapter. This was not the overall count me out moment for me, that was when I found myself on the fourth chapter with no clue on what was going on with the narrator and what her purpose in the book was and with no love story. If you are going to sell your book as a love story you got to give your reader a narrator that they connect with and like to hear and a love story or a bloom of a love story. Instead this book left me with a narrator that was a bore and no seeds of a love story in sight and I was already a quarter way through the book.
This book did not lead me to love the love story topics that authors love to write there books in and left me wanting to stay away from that part of the library due to how this book made me want to through it across the room because it was such a bore! Now if you want to convince me that I am wrong please comment below with a love story you think I should try and why and I will give it a chance!
